Before anything else, it's worth being clear about what the Brother F540E actually is: it's a dedicated embroidery machine, not a combination sewing-and-embroidery machine like our Pfaff or Viking models. It doesn't do regular garment stitching — straight seams, hemming, zippers, and so on aren't part of what this machine is built for. What it does, it does very well: embroidery, monogramming, and decorative personalisation, at a price and complexity level well below our premium combo machines.

That focus is exactly the appeal for a lot of buyers. If you want to monogram towels, personalise baby clothes, add names and logos to tote bags, or start a small embroidery/gifting side business without learning a full sewing machine at the same time, the F540E gives you a genuinely capable embroidery tool without the extra cost and complexity of sewing features you'd never use.

The embroidery area is a generous 180 x 130mm (7" x 5") — large enough to fit purchased design files without constantly hunting for a smaller-format version, and it shares its hoop system with several other Brother embroidery models, so if you ever expand your hoop collection later, it's not locked into just this machine. You get 193 built-in embroidery designs (55 of them new to this generation of Brother machines), plus 13 embroidery fonts across 3 sizes for lettering and monogramming straight out of the box.

Everything is managed through a 3.7-inch colour touchscreen, where you can flip, rotate, resize, and combine designs and fonts before you stitch — genuinely useful when you're lining up a name above a motif or centring a design on an odd-shaped item. The automatic needle threader works with a simple lever pull rather than fiddly manual threading, and the drop-in bobbin means less fuss getting started. Small details add up here too: automatic jump-stitch trimming keeps the back of your work neat without you trimming loose jumps by hand, colour sorting groups thread colour changes efficiently so you're not switching threads more than necessary, and upper and lower thread sensors warn you before you run out mid-design — nobody wants to discover a snapped thread three colours into a design.

The F540E also has WiFi (wireless LAN) connectivity, letting you transfer new designs to the machine without a cable, receive update notifications, and connect to Artspira, Brother's companion app — genuinely fun in practice, since you can literally sketch a design idea on your phone and send it to the machine to stitch out. A USB port is also available if you'd rather transfer designs that way. The whole workspace is LED-lit for accurate colour and detail work.

One thing to know if you're picturing cap or hat embroidery: that needs an optional cap frame accessory, which isn't included as standard — we can help you source one separately if that's part of your plans.
